An International Look at the Denver Debate
An International Look at the Denver Debate Photo from Facebook.com by University of Denver Some time passed and my flatmates came back. Not much had happened excitement-wise on my screen, so I lowered the volume and invited them to come in and talk while I watched. Of course, in the U.S., we always say that its rude to discuss religion and politics in social settings, but what Ive found here is that within minutes of finding out that youre American, the English want to know your opinion on the election. Its best to have your answer prepared to be discussed at length. Two of my British flatmates and two of my American flatmates sat with me that night and what I noticed most was that not only did the Brits know far more about the election and the politics of America, but they cared more. They nearly fell out of their chairs, mouths agape, when one of the Americans told us that she didnt plan on voting in this election because she simply didnt really have any sort of opinion on who won. From there, we began a debate of our own on why or why not one should vote in an election. While a few jokes were tossed around about escaping Britain for freedom, the main point of discussion came down to the fact that though we have the right to vote, there seems to be no good candidate to vote for. In England, Obama is seen as an extremely smooth and cool president, and thanks to Romneys gaffe during the London Olympics, hes not at all well-received here. However, it seems to me that because Englands own politics are a bit in shambles right now, they see the American struggles as merely a bump in the road; in short, they think Obama is doing well enough. In that way, theyre right. He is doing well enough, but not great, and thats the problem that most Americans have with him. I will be honest and tell you that I chose to have this discussion over watching the end of the debate. I felt that it was more important to get the global perspective on things rather than watch two grown men have a pissing match, repeating their meagre platforms that will probably never become more than that. I have heard that Romney won this debate, that Obama seemed careless and unprepared, but it all means nothing because unless they create truly moving points to sway the opinions of voters, rather than focusing on bashing one another. No one will care unless they give them a reason to, except maybe the Brits, but remember, they cant vote.

Improve Your Kids Writing Skills This Summer - TutorNerds
Improve Your Kids Writing Skills This Summer - TutorNerds Tips From an Irvine English Tutor: Five ways kids can improve their writing skills this summer Summer is in full swing and kids are enjoying some time outside of the classroom. English and writing are probably two of the farthest things from their mind, but kids can benefit from improving their core subjects over the summer. Writing is one of the essential skills that kids will use throughout their education as well as in any career field they might choose. Written communication helps students express themselves creatively, get a clear point across to a classmate or teacher, and persuade the reader to agree with their point of view. Whether a young learner needs to catch up to grade level or wants to excel beyond their current capabilities, there are some great ways students can improve their writing skills over the summer our in-home Irvine English tutors are here to improve your kids writing skills this summer. 1. Create a publication Creative students enjoy creating their very own publication based on their current interests and curiosities. Perhaps theyre going to write a magazine about monster trucks or a book about every species of bird living in their home state. It doesnt matter what kids write about but simply that they write. Kids can write a first and second draft, create pictures to go with their writing, ask parents or friends to read their publication, and increased their love of learning. When students write for fun, theyre more likely to enjoy the practical applications of the written word and want to pursue this intellectual task in the future. 2. Write summaries Most students have a reading list for the summer. One great way for students to get in a bit of writing practice is to write a summary after each chapter. They can discuss any growth or conflict the main characters had in that chapter, talk about important plot points, and ask questions about things they didnt quite grasp. Its important for students to go beyond the basic summary so they can expand their knowledge and make predictions about what will happen in the rest of the book. 3. Work with a one-on-one tutor Another great way for kids to increase their writing skills over the summer is to work with a one-on-one tutor. Many students excel in certain areas of writing but need some help with the basic mechanics. Lacking these skills can hold students back from communicating to their full ability and enjoying writing in general. When kids work with a one-on-one tutor in their home, they can focus only on what they need to improve and advance their skills quickly, moving on to other summer activities (READ: 5 Reasons to Hire a Los Angeles Summer Tutor). 4. Expand vocabulary A sure fire way to improve general writing skills is to expand a studentâs vocabulary. Countless students will write reports or assignments using the same word over and over again. This becomes distracting to the reader and also stops the writer from producing effective communication. When students have a broad vocabulary they can be descriptive using varied language, keep the reader interested and start to attach emotional meaning to different words that are most appropriate for specific situations. 5. Read for fun Students who read tend to be better writers because the two subjects are directly connected. During the school year, students have myriad mandatory assignments, but the summer offers a unique opportunity for students to read about topics they love. Reading for fun increases the studentâs ability to comprehend language as well as use it to express ideas. As long as students are reading books or articles at their current level, they should have a chance to choose what they want to read about. Its not important if they read about something specific but simply that their reading skills improve consistently and that they continue to love reading rather than viewing it as a chore. Summer is the perfect time of the year for your kids to improve their writing skills. Call us today and we will match you with an experienced Irvine English tutor from TutorNerds. ?? Why you Should Hire an SEN Tutor for your Child
?? Why you Should Hire an SEN Tutor for your Child Why you Should Hire an SEN Tutor for your Child Kids with Special Educational Needs (SEN) often struggle with mainstream teaching. These needs include conditions like dyslexia, dyspraxia, and autism. The nature of these conditions means kids often require specialist help that most school teachers are unable to provide. Add to that the fact that class sizes are increasing while resources are decreasing, and itâs no wonder your child is struggling. For that reason, an increasing number of parents are hiring private SEN tutors to help their child. Here are some reasons why you should hire an SEN tutor.1) Your Child is the PriorityEven if your child has special requirements, itâs hard for teachers to give them the attention they require. After all, they still need to be on hand to help the rest of the class. This can often make your child feel more isolated, and they will end up falling further behind with their studies. A private SEN tutor, however, puts your child first. For the entirety of each session, theyâre only focused on h elping your child. This means they can help your child with any issues they face, and your child knows that they donât have to compete for attention.2) Theyâre an ExpertThe average teacher may be aware of SEN, and know some of the basic ways in which they can help your child. They wonât, however, be experts. This means they canât always support your child to the extent they need.SEN tutors have a complete understanding of your childâs issues, and so they can offer the best possible support.Theyâll know all of the latest techniques to aid your child as effectively as possible, and can help them with any issues theyâre facing.3) Itâs More ComfortableFor some kids with SEN, school can be a daunting place. They can often feel ignored, and may even be experiencing bullying or teasing.Their lack of confidence or understanding of social relationships can make school a very uncomfortable place to be.Private SEN tutoring takes place in the comfort of your childâs home. Theyâ ll feel more relaxed, and so more open to receiving the help that their tutor can provide.By providing a âsafe spaceâ for your child to develop, your childâs tutor can get to the heart of the issue far quicker than their teacher.4) Your Childâs Confidence will ImproveConfidence is a big issue for kids with SEN. They often compare themselves to their classmates, and donât always understand why they canât keep up.This lack of confidence starts a vicious cycle, where they become even more withdrawn, lose more confidence, and then withdraw themselves further. When you hire an SEN tutor, part of their job is to instil confidence in your child. They do this by taking the time to listen to them, and supporting them with their schoolwork. As your childâs school work improves, and their self-esteem increases, so too will their confidence. Theyâll start participating more in lessons, and engaging more with classmates.5) Learning will Become FunLearning should be fun. For some kids with SEN, however, learning becomes a chore, or even the stuff of nightmares.Your child might end up hating school, and as a result theyâll also hate learning. This can have a really negative impact on their development, and also their future life.An SEN tutor can make learning fun again. They arenât confined by the syllabus or the formal classroom setting. They can use different techniques, more suited to your childâs condition, to make subjects come to life.Once your child realises learning can be fun, their whole attitude will shift. Chances are theyâll start enjoying their time at school, and their grades will improve as a result.Find an SEN TutorIf you have a child with special educational needs, it can be hard to know what to do next. The issues your child faces can feel overwhelming. An SEN tutor wonât only help your child overcome those issues, but theyâll help you cope too.If youâre concerned about the added expense, take a look at how much an SEN tutor is likely to cost. You might be pleasantly surprised.Fill in the form below for some personalised quotes. Weâll match you with the best 3 tutors for your child!

Enriching Your World With Saturated Chemistry
Enriching Your World With Saturated ChemistryBeing taught to think in saturated chemistry requires you to learn about what that term actually means. In a more simple sense, it refers to the most used aspects of chemical and physical science. Every living thing is made up of atoms, which are connected to each other by chemical bonds. If you think about the building blocks of everything you have in your home, like your clothes, furniture, walls, and of course, the people you love, then you will get a clear picture of what this term actually means. The idea of the state is that a substance has a chemical or physical affinity to another substance, or the reverse. We call them 'Saturated' when there is a greater affinity to the other substance than the original.Saturated chemistry is the study of interactions between different substances that are closely related by chemical bonds. Everything in the world that we can see or touch was once in the form of molecules or even solids. Sometimes, these mixtures are no longer considered solid but liquid. That is why the term 'solid' is commonly used when discussing the mixture between two liquids. What makes these methods of chemistry so important is that they serve as a great way to determine the properties of a substance, and how they interact with one another. This information is so valuable to the production of commercial products and industrial processes. For example, if a chemical makes the oil tank lubricant flow better than the old material, it can be predicted by the science of saturation chemistry.Since this method is such a broad topic, there are many uses of the science in different purposes. If you think about it, the science of saturation can be useful in numerous ways, like these: the treatment of plants, soil, animals, and people, as well as various industrial processes. It can also be used in medicine, as well as the farming industry. When thinking about it, the science of saturation could potentially help peop le with their daily lives. Saturated chemistry is now applied in so many ways, from the production of fuel to the cultivation of plants. When the processes in our environment are monitored for any changes, the time will come when we will see changes too.The science of saturation has seen a lot of development over the years and is still going strong as a scientific field. However, it is crucial to note that these are just some of the things saturated chemistry can teach us.
Part IV How to Conjugate the Imperfect in Spanish
Part IV How to Conjugate the Imperfect in Spanish Suzy S. As you learn Spanish, imperfect conjugations are bound to come up. Learn how to handle them and improve your Spanish grammar knowledge in this post by Fairfax, CA tutor Jason N... As you probably already know, conjugation is crucial to learning Spanish! As we get to this fourth post in my conjugation series, you may be pleasantly surprised when you realize that its all about mastering patterns and formulas! By now, you have come a long way; you know about conjugating basic Spanish verbs in present tense, stem-changing verbs in present tense, irregular verb conjugations in their yo form, and how to conjugate Spanish verbs in the preterite (past) tense. This post is about learning how to conjugate the imperfect tense, when to use it, and how it differs from the past tense. Whereas the past tense refers to a one-time isolated event of the past, the imperfect tense describes past events that occurred in a habitual, repetitive, or routine manner. Identical to the past tense, the Spanish imperfect tense also breaks down verbs into five different ending variants. By now you have probably realized how it works. All we need to do now is learn a new formula for Spanish imperfect conjugations. As we have already used the example of the verb mirar (to watch) in Spanish, letâs continue to stick with the same example: How to Conjugate -ar Verbs in the Imperfect Tense: Shave off the ar ending If you are referring to yo or âI,â add the ending aba to end the conjugated verb, forming miraba. If you are referring to tú or âyou,â use the ending abas, to form mirabas. If you are referring to él or ella or âhe or she,â use the ending aba to form miraba. (Yes, this is the same as the yo form!) If you are referring to nosotros or âwe,â use the ending ábamos to form mirábamos. If you are referring to ellos or âthey,â use the ending aban, to form miraban. How to Conjugate -er Verbs in the Imperfect Tense: What about -er verbs? Letâs use comer (to eat) again, for example: Shave off the er ending Yo uses the ending Ãa, (instead of aba) to form comÃa. If you are referring to tú or âyou,â use the ending Ãas, to form comÃas. If you are referring to él or ella or âhe or she,â use the ending Ãa, to form comÃa. (Yes, this is the same as the Yo form as well!) If you are referring to nosotros or âwe,â use the ending Ãamos, to form comÃamos. If you are referring to ellos or âthey,â use the ending Ãan, to form comÃan. How to Conjugate -ir Verbs in Spanish This conjugation has the same rules as -er verbs. Lets review the following charts of key imperfect conjugations: Mirar (to watch): Yo miraba Tú mirabas Ãl/Ella/Usted miraba Nosotros mirábamos Ellas/Ellos/Ustedes miraban Comer (to eat): Yo comÃa Tú comÃas Ãl/Ella/Usted comÃa Nosotros comÃamos Ellas/Ellos/Ustedes comÃan Vivir (to live): Yo vivÃa Tú vivÃas Ãl/Ella/Usted vivÃa Nosotros vivÃamos Ellas/Ellos/Ustedes vivÃan Ready for some practice? Conjugate the following in the imperfect tense: Whatâs the difference between the imperfect and the preterite past tense? We use the preterite tense in Spanish to describe an isolated event that occurred in the past. This event usually happened only once, and then ended. In this sense, it stays in the past. To reiterate, imperfect tense, on the other hand, describes past events that occurred in a habitual, repetitive, or routine manner. Ready for the Quiz? In which of the following would you use the imperfect tense instead of the preterite tense? What would the correct verb conjugation be? 1) I used to play basketball after school with my dad. 2) I went snowboarding with my friends in December of 2007. 3) I would do my homework on Sunday nights after school in high school. 4) I had six pets when I was a teenager. 5) I cut my finger when I was cutting an apple in Yosemite. BONUS 6) When I was 25, I walked across a tunnel. In conclusion, in Spanish, imperfect conjugations are the easiest to learn because there are only three irregular verbs: ir, ver and ser, whose stems are iba, veÃa and era, respectively. If youâre feeling really ambitious, practice these ones. Iâll remind you again to experiment with a Spanish tutor to see how well you can learn this! Answer Key: 1) I 2) P 3) I 4) I 5) P 6) Trick question! Cuando tenÃa (imperfect, AND in Spanish we have years, instead of being years) 25, caminé (past tense) por un túnel. Post Author: Jason N. Is Arabic Hard to Learn
Is Arabic Hard to Learn Is Learning Arabic Difficult? ChaptersLet Go of Your Presuppositions Regarding ArabicObstacles in Arabic Lessons Are All RelativeJudging How Difficult It Is to Learn ArabicFor some people, the task of learning a new language with all of its corresponding grammar, spelling, conjugations, and everything else, just seems impossible. Others see learning a new language as a marvellous opportunity to learn something new and expand their horizons, as well as learning about different cultures and regions of the world. One of the main things that puts people off studying a new language is the difficulty often associated with doing so. Many people had negative experiences learning languages at school and are therefore less keen to go through that again. There is always a desire for a so-called quick fix, with some people suggesting it is possible to master Arabic in 30 days. But remember that you will need to be patient when learning this ancient language. Hard work and dedication are both the key to success when learning Ar abic.So whatâs it really like learning Arabic? Is it really that difficult to study?Donât Make Mountains Out of Molehills!Of course, the Arabic language has almost nothing in common with English; either in structure, grammar, or pronunciation. However, this shouldnât stop you from deciding to learn the language. At the beginning, youâll hit a few walls as you try to learn Arabic, but this is normal no matter what you choose to study. As long as you keep at it, what once seemed a massive challenge will eventually be completely achievable.Donât forget to study regularly for your Arabic class! If you truly immerse yourself in the language, and you give it everything you've got, many of the things that previously seemed impossible to absorb will suddenly become obvious and you'll wonder why you ever struggled. You will start to see the many benefits of studying Arabic, and your eyes will be opened to a wide range of fantastic Arabic cultures which have heavily influenced the moder n world in more ways that most people fully comprehend.Donât Forget the Small Rules!Without realizing it, we use lots of idioms and cliches in English which make it an incredibly tough language, not only to learn, but to understand and to fully utilize.Itâs a fact - native speakers are often the worst at judging the difficulty of their language. So for some people, Arabic classes could seem nice and easy, but to others they might appear horribly difficult.Pay attention to what people tell you and do some research about the Arabic language to decide if you really want to learn it. If you decide to pursue Arabic, youâll find dozens of ways to achieve your goal. What you must remember is that language learning should be fun. Don't get bogged down in the grammatical intricacies of Arabic writing. As a new learner, you should focus on the conversational side of the language, with an emphasis on Arabic words and Arabic phrases. An enormous amount of help can be found online to help you learn Arabic, with a number of free resources being readily available. What's more, most Arabic classes are affordable.Judging How Difficult It Is to Learn ArabicWhen you think that there are over 7000 languages currently spoken in the world, including all the different dialects, it would be difficult to make a purely analytical assessment of which language is the most difficult to learn. So while some African languages have a reputation for having incredibly difficult grammar, or alembic structures, they arenât often included in the lists of the most challenging languages to learn.Throw yourself heart and soul into learning Arabic! So how can you decide if a language like Arabic is difficult or not? There are several different objective criteria that you can use to judge just how difficult it is to learn Arabic. How Long Does It Take to Learn Arabic? This is a difficult question to answer. This does not only depend on each individual person and how much time and energy they invest in to learning Arabic, but it also has to do with previous language experience, the quality of teaching and the exposure to the language outside of a learning environment. Your attitude and your motivation will also play a key role in how long it takes you to learn Arabic. However, according to the US Foreign Service Institute (FSI), Arabic is a group 4 language. Research done by the FSI suggests that it will take around 720 hours of study to reach a basic fluency level in Arabic, whereby you can talk about social situations and work requirements. This is compared to 480 hours for group 1 languages such as French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. Therefore it is highly recommended that you are committed to learning Arabic, and that you take advantage of all of the resources at your disposal and online to make sure that the process is a successful one.How Similar Is It to Your Mother Tongue?A good way to evaluate how difficult a language will be for you to learn, is to find out ho w different it is from your native language. For example, if Spanish or German seem like the easiest languages for you to learn, thatâs because they have more in common with English, especially thanks to the âvulgarâ Latin that was spoken as the official language of the Roman Empire at the dawn of the first century AD.After all, French, Spanish, and Italian are all divergent dialects which came from the same language (English is a slightly unique case because of its history of invasions, and although it has many similarities with the Romance languages, it is actually classified as Germanic.)Do all the roads lead to the Arabic language? If you speak Spanish well, there are many words that might seem familiar in Arabic, but with different intonations. This comes from the long Arab presence on the Iberian peninsula. As for French, it might seem easy for an English speaker to learn because a lot of English words actually came from French originally. However, the pronunciation is ofte n very different and can pose a challenge for French students. As you are probably now starting to see, the further from English (or a Romance or Germanic language) you go, the more difficult the language will seem, and youâll face more challenges as the language youâre studying seems to have less in common with English. Are the Sounds Similar? If two languages have similar sounds, learning to speak a new language will often seem slightly easier. But in Arabic, it is difficult to find any similar vowel or word sounds to English. If you asked a native Arabic speaker to pronounce the difference between âinâ âonâ and âanâ, would they hear a difference?According to one study, Italian is considered to be the most beautiful European language, but that might be because most of the sounds in Italian are also present in other European languages, to various degrees. It is this sense of familiarity which makes us think that Italian is a beautiful and easy language to learn. With the A rabic language, itâs more difficult to find similarities in the sounds and pronunciations, especially since vowels are barely pronounced in the language.Even though the Arabic alphabet has a somewhat familiar 28 letters, none of them resemble what we tend to use in America or Europe. Not to mention that the shape of each letter changes depending on where itâs placed in the word. From this point of view, alas, it seems a given that learning Arabic will be more difficult for English speakers than for students who are coming from other languages.Complex Grammar StructuresArabic is spoken by more than 400 million people worldwide. However, there are many different variations on Arabic, especially between the written (literary Arabic) and spoken (dialect) forms. It isn't necessary to learn literary Arabic if you want to speak Arabic, but itâs a very good place to start if you want to learn the structure of the language well and avoid any bad linguistic habits.Spoken Arabic, on the oth er hand, is something quite different. Essentially, each Arabic speaking country has developed its own local dialect, with its own unique vocabulary, expressions, and grammar. If you live in Morocco, it isnât a given that youâll be able to understand Tunisian or Egyptian Arabic, or even that will understand someone from the United Arab Emirates. You should think about which Arabic dialect you want to learn to speak, and make sure you find the right teacher and resources to learn the type of Arabic that you want to.You will surely find the right teacher for your Arabic lessons London on Superprof!A Confusing ScriptMost Western languages use the Latin alphabet, and it is easy to recognize all the different letters that make up the English alphabet. This is another challenging aspect about Arabic - there are 28 letters in the Arabic alphabet, but their forms all change depending on where the words fall in the sentence.Learn to decode the Arabic alphabet! You might see the same letter a t the beginning, end, or in the middle of a word, each time with a completely different meaning.Youâll also have to learn to stop reading from left to right, and begin reading in the opposite direction - but this is a hard habit to break for a native English speaker! The 3 Unknown SoundsFinally, pronunciation and reading pose one of the big challenges to learning Arabic - there are 3 sounds in Arabic which donât exist in most Western languages, and are written with the numbers 3, 7, and 9.These sounds donât exist at all in English and therefore mastering them can be somewhat tricky. But what are they? The sound âquâ which comes from the back of the throat, a rough âhâ, and finally a vocalized âhâ that sounds like âai.âOnce youâve learned how to understand and interpret all of these little quirks and differences of the Arabic language, learning Arabic will be just the same as any other language. As you can see, learning Arabic will take a lot of personal dedicati on; itâs a long process which requires regular study of spelling and grammar rules.Arabic is not a language that you can just dip in and out of. It requires dedication and a commitment of time and effort if you truly want to learn to speak and write it.You will also need to make good use of a wide range of resources. It is highly recommended that you get hold of a good English-Arabic dictionary, especially if you want to learn Modern Standard Arabic. You should also search for some of the best smartphone apps to help you to practice what you have learned whilst you are commuting to and from work. But perhaps the best way to tackle learning Arabic is to find an Arabic course. This could be an Arabic for beginners course at a local language school, private one or one classes with a native speaker, or if you are particularly motivated, free online classes for learning Arabic on the internet. The prospect of learning Arabic can often seem quite difficult when you first start studying it , but so long as you work hard and maybe do a bit of conversation practice with an Arab speaker, youâll make consistent progress. If you make good use of all of the tools and resources available to you, you will progress quickly and you will learn about fascinating history of a language and a culture which is constantly shaping the modern world in which we live. There isnât just one place to go to learn Arabic, and since itâs spoken in so many countries you have a wide choice to choose from. So whether it's Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, or Lebanon, take your pick and discover a language that has been evolving for millennia. And remember, this is your best bet to learn Arabic quickly.
